In this video I wanted to share 7 pro techniques for beginners getting started with street photography.
Tip 1: Shoot Auto
You may hear a lot online about the importance of shooting in Manual, well you don’t HAVE to. If you’re just getting started then manual settings will make the process slower and more difficult.
Tip 2: Look at the greats who have stood the test of time
As useful as Instagram might appear, I sometimes find it damaging to be your main source of inspiration. If you looked at work from the greats like Earnst Haas, Joel Meyerowitz, Garry Winogrand and Helen Levitt you’ll find established work that set the bar decades before us and if those people and their work are still being appreciated and talked about now you know you can learn from and take inspiration from to apply into your own work.
Tip 3: Find your composition and wait
Using interesting light and shadow or architecture can help us. Search for a frame, for something you think is interesting and then wait for the right subject to make it come alive. With this approach you letting the streets move around you and you’re observing until the right moment comes along and you capture it.
Tip 4: Get comfortable with one focal range
By sticking to one focal length like a 35mm or 50mm will encourage your eye to do most of the work. You’ll figure out why some angles look better than others you’ll be more intentional. I think you will learn more from taking intentional images rather than spray and pray at any focal length.
Tip 5: Pack Light
One body and one lens just streamlines the process for me. The smaller the better in fact. That’s why much loved cameras for street photography are the likes of a Ricoh GR or Fujifilm X series because they are easy to carry around.
Tip 6: Follow the light
I find that where the light is most interesting is where more photographs can be made. For the most part, on any given day I’ll just follow the light and look where it seems to be hitting the streets best and that’ll be my starting point.
